Imagine stepping outside on a quiet Saturday morning.
Coffee in hand, you walk onto a wide stone patio. The air is still. The pool water looks like glass. For the first time all week, everything feels calm.
It feels like this backyard was always meant to be here.
But not long ago, this same space in Haymarket, Virginia looked very different.
Behind the house was a steep grassy slope. The ground dropped so sharply that building anything there felt impossible.
No patio.
No pool.
No place to gather with friends or family.
Just a hill that seemed to say “no” to every idea.
Today, that same backyard is an award-winning outdoor space—earning First Place for Hardscape at the 2025 NADRA National Deck Competition.
A sloped backyard can feel limiting.
Standing on uneven ground, it’s hard to imagine where a patio could go. A pool seems unrealistic. Even a simple gathering space can feel out of reach.
For many homeowners, a hillside becomes wasted space—something to mow but rarely enjoy.
But with the right design, a difficult slope can be reshaped into a level, welcoming space for everyday living.
What once felt impossible can start to feel natural.
One of the strongest design choices in this project was simplicity.
Instead of mixing many colors and materials, the backyard uses a consistent palette of cool gray stone. The clean look allows the architecture and landscape to stand out.
Walking across the patio, everything feels balanced and intentional—like the backyard belongs to the home instead of being added later.
At the heart of the space is a 45-foot gunite pool built for both relaxing and gathering.
A 25-foot tanning ledge offers a shallow area where you can sit in the water and enjoy the sun. The deeper end provides room for swimming and diving.
As the sunlight shifts throughout the day, the water reflects different shades—from deep slate to soft pearl.
The space may look effortless, but much of the work is hidden beneath the surface.
More than 1,600 square feet of UniLock Beacon Hill Flagstone forms the patio, supported by a 54-foot stone seat wall that stabilizes the hillside.
Most visitors never think about this part—and that’s the goal. The best outdoor spaces simply feel natural.
In the evening, subtle lighting beneath the stone softly illuminates the patio.
No harsh floodlights. Just a warm glow that turns the backyard into a peaceful place to unwind.
The kind of space where evenings stretch a little longer.
Many homes have an area that feels difficult to use—a steep slope, an awkward layout, or a space that never felt finished.
But sometimes those challenging spots hold the most potential.
With the right vision, what once felt unusable can become the place you enjoy the most.
The place where you step outside, sit down, and realize everything finally feels right.
